President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology Advisors Highlights the Importance of Energy Storage Technology.
November 19, 2006

The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) mentions Gaia Power Technologies in a recently released a report outlining strategies for fueling innovation in the energy technology sector.

“The Energy Imperative: Technology and the Role of Emerging Companies” analyzes entrepreneurial activity in the electric power and transportation sectors, and outlines technologies that could promote energy security and environmental protection. Emerging solutions offer the promise of meeting rising demand for energy while reducing polluting emissions associated with current technologies.

The report highlights the importance of energy storage in supporting efficiency and renewables:

It is difficult to overstate the importance of energy storage. The efficiency and cost-competitiveness of renewable electricity generation and alternative-fuel vehicles could be significantly improved by the availability of low-cost, high-capacity storage. For example, because solar and wind power generation is intermittent — the sun and the wind are not constantly available — these systems require energy storage if they are to serve as a reliable supply of electricity throughout the day.

Small companies play a crucial role in developing new technologies, which the PCAST report emphasizes, mentioning Gaia Power Technologies as an example of an entrepreneurial company developing energy technology; exactly the sort of activity PCAST advocates supporting.
